NHS England Southwest (NHSE-SW) and the Postgraduate Medical Education Office is delighted to announce two secondment fellowship opportunities to work with our senior staff.  

 

The fellowships offer a unique opportunity to improve the development and career progression of SAS doctors and promote the capability necessary for their future roles as senior doctors and clinical leaders in their workplace. 

 

The knowledge and skills acquired through these posts will provide leadership experience to a successful SAS doctor. It is anticipated that at the end of the tenure, the fellow(s) will be well placed in the future to lead, to promote and disseminate support to others SAS colleagues. They will be able to help SAS doctors with career progression and to promote recognition of the grade in the healthcare community. 

 

Applicants should be a GMC registered doctor in an SAS grade post (Specialist, Associate Specialist, Specialty Doctor, Staff grade) working within the geographical responsibility of the Severn/ Peninsula Postgraduate Medical Education region. There are 2 posts available on a 12-month secondmentrenewable for a further 12 months following agreement by both the Lead Associate Dean and appointee.  

 

The start date will be dependent on successful negotiations with the employer (i.e.Clinical lead, Director of Medical Education with support from the SAS Tutor).  

 

The SAS doctor (fellow) will return to their usual role at the end of their secondment. 

 

It is anticipated that each successful post-holder will spend 2 days (0.4 WTE) on an agreed strategy and proposals aligned to the 10 year plan / three shifts and regional priorities. They may also lead on an individual support project. The Trust(s) will be reimbursed for the SAS doctors time out at basic rate, minus out of hours costs and any other additional allowances.  

 

National priorities to consider are the 3 shifts in how the NHS works

  • Analogue to Digital 
  • Sickness to Prevention

The appointed SAS Doctor may also have the opportunity to complete a postgraduate qualification (PG Cert) depending on availability and funding. This can be discussed at interview. 

 

Selection will be by a Postgraduate Medical Education Office interview process. 

Closing date – 14 September 2025 

Interview - Week commencing 13 October 2025. You will be expected to make a five-minute presentation, the topic of which will be confirmed further to shortlisting
